Federation - what flows where, and why? https://blog.dereferenced.org/federation-what-flows-where-and-why
Saddened to hear about the passing of a well loved #Calgary personality Nomi Whalen, a former city councillor, marriage commissioner and friend of the family (she was the officiant for multiple marriages in my family). Her late husband Ed Whalen was a colourful local TV personality known for being commentator of Calgary Flames hockey and Stampede Wrestling.
Nomi was always committed to equality, fairness and justice and will be missed and fondly remembered.
I tend to click on a lot of links that are #retrocomputing related and I wanted somewhere to post lots of them, without spamming everything into Chinwag Local - so I'm trying something out.
Come hang out, post stuff if you want, let's see if it goes anywhere.
Today I learned that Rocket.Chat, an open source team communications platform similar to Slack, allows federation! I am a big fan of IRC and XMPP because they are open protocols that allow anyone to set up their own private server. XMPP further allows you to federate your server to other XMPP servers. I definitely need to keep an eye on Rocket.Chat now!
This is the sound of rhubarb growing in the dark. And someone really needs to take some sound samples to make a percussion track from it.

"Forced rhubarb" is a technique for growing fresh rhubarb in the Winter, while keeping it in pitch dark conditions. Done correctly, the plants grow super fast. Fast enough that you can hear it popping and creaking as it grows!
I think a lot of times some people misinterpret "I think what you said was offensive" as "I am offended with what you said". They sound similar but are not really the same thing.
Like maybe the person calling you out isn't actually as hypersensitive as you think and they are just letting you know that you sounded like a jackass and perhaps you might want to work on that.
And if that upsets you maybe that person isn't the sensitive one, or at least the *only* sensitive one.
I dunno.

So I'm picking through the data volume of an old production server that was just running and neglected for like almost 7 years and has to be rebuilt and it has directories full of PHP and other source code and random data dumps...
and they are literally named things like ./garbage/app/shit ...
And the person who put them there left the company years before I started...
Ho boy.
