PSA: last night one of our pyrex cooking dishes exploded.
not fractured, exploded. “pyrex isn’t supposed to do that” we thought.
as of a few years ago, Pyrex sold their brand, the new company changed glass recipe as a cost cutting measure, resulting in a pandemic of exploding cookware and a class action lawsuit.
thankfully the patent has expired and the keyword to look for in competing glass cookware products is “borosilicate glass”

Well, at least the big ol' elephant *seems* happier now that I've fed it a couple more vCPUs. I have enough of them that I don't need to be TOO stingy. Seems a combination of software upgrades and new signups (mostly attempted signups by spambots actually) may be a contributing factor to stability and resource usage issues here.
Will keep an eye on it. Have other ideas if the extra cores don't work.
I know we all heard of the Seti@home shutdown last week, but there is a new viable project. Folding@Home has been around for nearly as long as SETI@Home, but they have turned their efforts toward speeding up research toward treatments to battle COVID-19.
If you have spare cycles, I would ask you to consider spending them here.
This is something that both local governments and ride-sharing #PlatformCooperatives can push for, by sharing the costs of developing a #FreeCode software stack for running ride-sharing services. Ideally one that allows users to download vendor-neutral apps, that can connect with a range of services available wherever they are, over a common protocol. This could include public transport, taxis, and ride-hailing and car-sharing services.
Every time I go out fossil-hunting on the Peace River, I don't want to leave. I want to stay and explore deeper and deeper into the wilderness until I find a karst cave which I will turn into my own Grizzly Adams remote redoubt. I'll live off fish that I catch and berries that I cultivate.
My name will be Marshy Mike and I will be a legend of the swamps. Campers will tell tales of me around the fire.
Then go back home and post stuff on the interwebs.
Viral post (COVID-19)
OK, so The Virus™️ has arrived in #YYC and now the selection of toilet paper at the supermarket has become quite limited.
Wh...why toilet paper? This is basically a nasty cold virus. It doesn't give you the shits! What is the purpose of all the TP?
(seriously I want to know the logic behind this obsession)

Musings on emojos, giving credit and authorship on Fedi:
I really wish that the emojos that one can simply select from the federated emojos db and click "copy" would have attached to them the name and/or handle of their creators, in some sort of metada-ish way, along with their license, if any.
Then it'd be way easier to give credit. Sometimes I know. Sometimes I make them. Sometimes I ask fedi to help me find the creator of one or two sets of emojos... This would all be way less spoony if there was such a thing, AND in the GUI.
I'm a GUI cat, m'kay?
