I still occasionally remember, as a child, reading an Encyclopedia Brown story where the solution hinged on the fact that "everybody knows" the correct order that toppings are supposed to go on a hot dog, and get unreasonably angry at the author.
It wasn't even "everybody knows" what toppings go on a hot dog. It was the specific order.

@morganth I remember enjoying Encyclopedia Brown books as a kid (our teacher in, I think Grade 4) read a few of them aloud to us in class and I probably read a few myself. I'm glad that I have forgotten all the plots, because that thread is just full of WTF moments.

@ink_slinger My favorite, back in the day, was the cookbook. Each mystery had related recipes at the end, and when I was a kid, that made cooking really approachable. I still make meatloaf from a recipe in that book.
